Love undergoes surgery
Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love will miss at least a week after having a procedure to repair a ligament issue in his left thumb, General Manager Brian Gutekunst said Tuesday. Love was spotted with his thumb wrapped on the sideline during the Packers' 30-10 preseason loss to the New York Jets on Saturday. Love started the game and went 1 of 5 for 7 yards with neither of the two drives he led resulting in points. The injury is to Love's non-throwing hand and occurred, Coach Matt LaFleur said, when he was sacked for a 3-yard loss by Jay Tufele on the quarterback's final snap from scrimmage. LaFleur said he's been informed the recovery process is a quick one, with the expectation Love will be back at practice in some capacity next week. Green Bay travels to play Indianapolis on Aug. 16, and LaFleur has already ruled out Love from playing in the Packers' final preseason game against Seattle on Aug. 23.
NFL appeals Gruden ruling
The NFL will appeal the Nevada Supreme Court's ruling Monday that former Las Vegas Raiders Coach Jon Gruden can proceed with his lawsuit and not go through the league for arbitration. The league will request a rehearing from the same court that overturned a prior Nevada Supreme Court panel ruling in May 2024 that the matter could go to arbitration. But in October, Gruden was granted a hearing by the full court. Gruden filed a lawsuit in 2021 against the NFL and Commissioner Roger Goodell, alleging a "malicious and orchestrated campaign" to destroy his career by leaking old emails he sent that included racist, misogynistic and homophobic comments that pressured the Raiders to fire him. Gruden resigned from the Raiders in October 2021 and sued the league a month later.
Mateer denies gambling
Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer said in a social media post Tuesday he has never gambled, and the school says there is no NCAA investigation after a recent report showed Mateer twice paid someone on Venmo in 2022 for "sports gambling." Mateer, who was at Washington State at the time, said these were inside jokes with friends and not actual bets. He assured his teammates, coaches and the NCAA that he has never gambled on sports. Oklahoma confirmed there is no NCAA investigation and states they use ProhiBet to monitor gambling activities. Mateer followed former Washington State offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle to Oklahoma this past offseason. Mateer passed for 3,139 yards with 29 touchdowns and just 7 interceptions while running for 826 yards and 15 scores last season. He was one of three players who accompanied Oklahoma Coach Brent Venables at SEC media days in July. The Sooners were No. 18 in the preseason AP top 25 released Monday despite a 6-7 record last season.
Vikings WR out for season
Wide receiver and return specialist Rondale Moore will miss another season because of a knee injury. The Minnesota Vikings confirmed Tuesday that testing on Moore's left knee revealed a season-ending injury. Moore spent the first three years of his NFL career with the Arizona Cardinals. He dislocated his right knee during training camp with the Atlanta Falcons in 2024 and never played for them. His latest injury came while returning a punt Saturday for Minnesota in an exhibition game as he was tackled at the sideline. Vikings Coach Kevin O'Connell described the situation as "heartbreaking."
Bills RB Cook ends holdout
Buffalo Bills running back James Cook resumed practicing on Tuesday, ending -- temporarily, at least -- his "hold-in" as part of a contract standoff that began on Aug. 3. Cook took the field in uniform and participated at the start of practice after missing four straight sessions last week -- the last two in which the fourth-year player failed to make an appearance on the sideline. Speaking before practice, Coach Sean McDermott referred to Cook's return as a step in the right direction. Cook, who shared the NFL lead with 16 rushing touchdowns last season, is seeking a contract extension in the final year of his rookie deal.

Houston closer hits IL
Houston Astros All-Star closer Josh Hader was placed on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with a strained left shoulder. The move, retroactive to Monday, comes after the left-hander reported shoulder discomfort before Monday's game against the Boston Red Sox. Manager Joe Espada said they are conducting more tests and hope the injury isn't long term. Espada hasn't named a replacement closer, opting to use relievers based on matchups. Hader, in his second season with Houston, has a 2.05 ERA and 28 saves in 48 appearances this season. To take his spot on the roster, the AL West-leading Astros reinstated right-hander Shawn Dubin. They also designated right-hander Hector Neris for assignment and recalled left-hander Colton Gordon from Class AAA Sugar Land.

Duplantis raises record
Mondo Duplantis raised his pole vault world record to 6.29 meters at the Istvan Gyulai Memorial meet in Budapest on Tuesday. On his second attempt, the Olympic and world champion added a centimeter to the previous record mark which he set in June at a Diamond League meet in front of home fans in Stockholm. It was the 13th pole vault world record for the 25-year-old Swede and the third this year.
U.S. sprinter suspended
U.S. Olympic sprinter Fred Kerley has been provisionally suspended for "whereabouts failures" under the sport's anti-doping rules, the Athletics Integrity Unit said Tuesday. Lawyers for the 30-year-old Kerley hit back in a statement posted on social media that said the Olympic medalist "strongly believes that one of (or) more of his alleged missed tests should be set aside." Kerley won the Olympic silver medal in the 100 meters at the Tokyo Games and the bronze in Paris last year. He has also earned six medals at the track and field world championships.
