The view from our Everton correspondent, Joe Thomas
Everton is an exciting place to be right now. The club finished last season with real momentum, ending with three consecutive wins to sign off a campaign that was heading towards another relegation fight until David Moyes’ return in January.
He did not just inject the feel-good factor upon his comeback either. His message has been one of driving ambition. Everton’s new stadium on the banks of the is one fit for champions.
Now, creating a team befitting will take time, money and patience. But this should be the first season in five in which relegation is not a lingering threat and the only way may well be up. The problem for Moyes this summer is that convincing his targets that is the case has been tough - the legacy of recent crises hangs over the football world.
Those outside the Royal Blue bubble should now catch up following the additions of Club World Cup winner and Jack Grealish. There is still work to be done, but the expectation is that further signings to boost the right side of the team will be secured.
If that is the case then provide a source of opportunity - that 2/1 to finish in the top half of the table looks pretty favourable. This is a side that was on its knees at times last season and still finished 13th. Yes, the likes of Spurs and Man Utd should improve from beneath them.
Everton look in a good place to hunt down others though, with Bournemouth having lost their goalkeeper and three of their back four from last year’s campaign, Brentford having been gutted on the pitch and in the dugout and with complaining about the struggle to strengthen Fulham.
Palace, too, have not made progress in the transfer market and face an energy-sapping European campaign and the prospect of Champions League clubs swooping in for Ebereche Eze and Marc Guehi.
Moyes’ focus will be on Everton and Everton only. If the Blues can get off to a promising start, this should be a first, exciting step forward for a side on the up.
