Newcastle United are said to be making progress in their pursuit of Aston Villa youngster Jacob Ramsey, but the news has raised a huge concern should the reported £40m deal be completed.
Ramsey, a Bodymoor Heath academy graduate, looks set to make the switch in what would be a huge boost for Villa's position in meeting the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules.
Having come through the Villa youth ranks, the 24-year-old midfielder would represent pure profit for Monchi and Co in the club accounts, and as such allow them more financial wiggle room to make signings this summer.
Villa’s summer transfer business has been relatively restrained due to financial regulations, with just two first-team additions to date: Marco Bizot, signed as cover for Emi Martinez, and Evann Guessand, who arrived last week in a deal valued at around £30m.
Ramsey enjoyed a stop-start season under Unai Emery last time out, playing 45 times across all competitions, including 29 appearances in the top flight.
However, he endured a torrid spell with injuries in 2023/24, started while he was on international duty with England under-21s.
And that is a major worry for Magpies fans as the prospect of Ramsey linking up with Eddie Howe this summer edges closer to becoming a reality.

The Guardian are even suggesting that Ramsey could face Villa in Saturday's season-opener between the two teams at Villa Park (12.30pm), but such a prospect is far from being on the radar of "Toon" supporters.
One Newcastle fans posted on X: "Hopefully he stays fit" while another added: "If he stays fit, he's class."
And that was as optimistic as it got on social media as talk of a Ramsey move spread.
Another Magpie posted: "Even if he manages to stay fit, I can't see him starting, but he's better than our back-ups."
Another claimed: "If you can't shake off an injury at 24-years-old, then you've got no hope. £40 million is robbery."
Over the last three years, Ramsey has missed 356 days and 50 games due to injury, according to Transfermarkt.
But is is not all doom and bloom on Tyneside. One fan said: "Jacob Ramsey is a quality signing, well done Eddie Howe".
