Fabrizio Romano responds to Newcastle and Mateta rumours with separate deal now 'imminent'

GIVEMESPORT correspondent Fabrizio Romano has responded to rumours linking Newcastle United with a move to sign Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta in his latest newsletter.

The Magpies have had a mixed summer transfer window so far as Eddie Howe has added Anthony Elanga, Aaron Ramsdale and Malick Thiaw to his squad, but the club have also missed out on several top transfer targets and are also battling to keep hold of star striker Alexander Isak amid interest from Liverpool.

A new striker is said to be top of their priority list for the rest of the window before the September 1st deadline, and reports emerged on Tuesday that Palace star Mateta has emerged as their top target for the position.

Mateta has been one of the best strikers in the Premier League in recent seasons, netting 30 goals in his last 72 appearances in the competition for the Eagles.

The Frenchman has two years remaining on his contract at Selhurst Park and has been linked with a move away this summer as a result of those fine performances, and it has been reported that Newcastle have made him their top target as they look to replace Alexander Isak.

When asked in his latest GIVEMESPORT newsletter about the links between the two, Romano stated that there was nothing imminent that would take the striker to St James' Park, although there is another deal imminent for the Toon.

"There are 3 names per day on Newcastle for striker position... at the moment, the only imminent deal is Jacob Ramsey."

Howe has been keen to add athleticism and depth to his squad this summer ahead of the Champions League campaign, and a deal worth around £40m has now been agreed to take Ramsey from Aston Villa.

The player will now discuss personal terms before undergoing a medical, but it's believed he is keen on the move as he wanted Champions League football if he was to leave his boyhood club during the transfer window. GIVEMESPORT sources revealed that West Ham were also keen, but Ramsey wasn't interested in joining them.

A deal for Yoane Wissa is still expected to happen once Brentford have secured a replacement for the DR Congo man, while Newcastle are also interested in FC Porto star Samu Aghehowa, although GMS understands any deal for the Spaniard would be very difficult to pull off.
