Chiefs feel confident in revamped offensive line heading into 2025

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KCTV) - Fixing the offensive line was one of the top tasks for general manager Brett Veach and the Kansas City Chiefs in the offseason.

With just one more day left in training camp, the coaching staff seems confident that they’re headed in that direction.

“I think this is one of the best years we’ve had in terms of bringing in talent and competition across the board,” offensive line coach Andy Heck said at the podium on Tuesday. “That’s just gonna make the group better.”

Problem No. 1 was the left tackle spot, where there’s been a revolving door of starters in recent years.

After three weeks full of praise for first-round draft pick Josh Simmons, it’s safe to say he’s checked off a lot of their boxes.

“He’s certainly as talented a player as I’ve ever been around. He loves the game,” Heck said about Simmons. “He’s been able to every day add one or two of these little details that are important to each play. So I’ve seen him steadily improve. And his understanding, and we’re able to have better conversations about what’s going on.”

Who will fill the starting left guard and right tackle spots is still a bit up in the air. Kingsley Suamataia and Jawaan Taylor have taken first-team reps at left guard and right tackle, respectively, but offseason signee Jaylon Moore could slot in at either position.

While those positions are up in the air, center and right guard are solidified with Creed Humphrey and Trey Smith locked into long-term deals at each position.

But having a lot of solid competition within an offensive line is never a bad problem to have in the NFL.

“Those preseason games are gonna be huge,” Heck said about figuring out starters. “So who’s operating, basically getting their guy blocked most consistently. Who do we trust to put in there on a Sunday or a Monday night?”

The Chiefs play in their next preseason game on Friday at 9:00 p.m. against the Seattle Seahawks.
