Chelsea would be contenders to win the Premier League title this season if they can sign Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris Saint-Germain, according to Steve Sidwell.
The ex-Blues midfielder claims that the Italian’s arrival at Stamford Bridge could have a dramatic impact on his former club’s prospects of finishing top of the table:
“If Chelsea get him [Donnarumma], they’ve got the biggest chance of winning that Premier League title.”
Donnarumma is out in the cold at PSG, after talks over a contract extension stalled. The goalkeeper is not in Luis Enrique’s squad for the UEFA Super Cup final against Tottenham, and he is expected to leave the Parc Des Princes before the transfer window closes on September 1st.
The keeper has confirmed that he will be leaving PSG
Taking to Instagram on Tuesday, Donnarumma revealed that he had reluctantly decided to depart the Ligue One and European champions:

“To the special Paris fans. From the first day I arrived, I gave everything – on and off the pitch – to earn my place and defend the goal of Paris Saint-Germain. Unfortunately, someone has decided that I can no longer be part of the group and contribute to the team’s success. I am disappointed and disheartened.”
“I hope to have the opportunity to look the fans at the Parc des Princes in the eyes one more time and say goodbye as it should be done. If that doesn’t happen, I want you to know that your support and affection mean the world to me, and I will never forget it.”
“I will always carry with me the memory of all the emotions, the magical nights, and of you, who made me feel at home. To my teammates – my second family – thank you for every battle, every laugh, every moment we shared. You will always be my brothers. Playing for this club and living in this city has been an immense honour. Thank you, Paris.”
Chelsea are not the favourites to buy Donnarumma
Despite performing well at the Club World Cup, the majority of fans have been calling on the recruitment team to sign an upgrade for Robert Sanchez.
Talks were held with AC Milan about purchasing Mike Maignan back in June but negotiations collapsed after a fee could not be agreed.
In terms of Donnarumma, there were reports in France suggesting that Enzo Maresca’s side had made enquiries about the 26-year-old, but journalist Fabrizio Romano has recently refuted those claims.
At the moment, it appears that the Italian international’s most likely destination is Manchester City. The Cityzens are believed to have begun discussions with PSG already.
However, any transfer is thought to be contingent on Ederson leaving the Etihad Stadium. The Brazilian does have interest from Galatasaray, with the Turkish champions reportedly lining up an official bid.
As far as Chelsea are concerned, the main focus of their recruitment efforts currently appears to be Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho. The club are hoping to pay “significantly less” than his £50m asking price.
