'To be honest': Ben Foster says Man City really shouldn't sign £100m Premier League player now

Manchester City still have an eye on the current transfer market.

Pep Guardiola is keen to add Rodrygo to his ranks should Savinho depart for Tottenham, while a potential exit for Ederson would result in the Manchester club making a push for PSG’s Gianluigi Donnarumma.

These two areas seem to be the Premier League giants’ main focus at present, but there are others that Man City continue to monitor players for, with the plan to make a move during future transfer windows.

A report this week has stated that City have continued to monitor a Premier League star valued at £100m by his club, but Ben Foster believes Guardiola should avoid adding the player to his squad this summer.

Ben Foster says Man City should not move for Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton

Man City have had an interest in Adam Wharton for some time now, as the Englishman has been impressing ever since his move to Crystal Palace in January 2024.

This week, it was reported by the Daily Mail that Man City have continued to monitor the midfielder and have had people constantly in the stands watching the 21-year-old, who impressed again at the weekend in Palace’s Community Shield win over Liverpool.

Speaking about Man City’s interest in Wharton, Foster has stated that the Manchester club should avoid making a move for England international during the current transfer window, as they will have Rodri back to full fitness in a few weeks, which will stop the Palace star from playing.

“If Man City were the ones who came in for Adam Wharton, for example, right? They, by paying that amount of money, it kind of makes them have to play him, if that makes sense. Do you know what I mean?” Foster said on the latest episode of Fozcast – The Ben Foster Podcast.

“Because it’s so much money, Rodri, though, is only going to be out for a few months. Like, and once he comes back, Ballon d’Or winner there, you can’t not play Rodri. Do you know what I mean?

“I just think there are too many cooks spoiling the broth, to be honest with you, I don’t think City need to bother.

“Just leave him, I would prefer to see him in the Prem this year, ripping it up, and then everybody going, right, he could go to Real Madrid here, he could go to Barcelona, he could go to anyone he wants to, to be honest with you.”

How Rodri could help Man City sign Adam Wharton

The Daily Mail’s report also states that Real Madrid scouts have been keeping close tabs on Wharton, who they see as a potential reinforcement in the future.

Rodri is also a player Real Madrid have wanted for some time, and if the Spaniard doesn’t sign a new contract at the Etihad Stadium, City could allow the 29-year-old to move to the Bernabeu, which could give them a free run at Wharton.

The upcoming season will tell a lot about how the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner has recovered from his ACL injury, and if there are signs of decline, it could be a smart move to move the midfielder on next summer in order to land Wharton, who is on course to becoming a superstar in England.
