Man Utd sent the youngster out on loan in the summer transfer window and he returned to Greater Manchester this week.

Rotherham United manager Matt Hamshaw aimed a joke at Dan Gore after the Manchester United loanee missed a penalty for his new loan club in their shootout victory over Salford City. Rotherham progressed to the second round of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night after they defeated Salford 3-2 on penalties following a dull goalless draw at the Peninsula Stadium.

Gore has started both of Rotherham's matches in League One this season, but was named on the bench for their trip to Greater Manchester in midweek. The 20-year-old was introduced in the second half of the dull draw and played half an hour, but was unable to inspire them to a victory in normal time.

It meant the match would be decided by a penalty shootout and Gore was chosen as the third taker for his loan side. The clubs were drawing 2-2 in the shootout when Gore missed from 12 yards out, though he was redeemed when Salford missed their next two efforts as well.

Gore joined Rotherham to make up for lost time following a previous troubled loan spell at the club and another that didn't go according to plan with Port Vale. The fact that he has already started both of their league matches this season bodes well for his development, though he might need to win back Hamshaw after he mocked him following the match.

"I've just said to Dan Gore: 'Good luck taking a penalty at Old Trafford when you can't score one at Salford!'," the Rotherham boss told reporters at full-time.

Hamshaw went on to praise goalkeeper Cameron Dawson who saved two penalties during the shootout success. β€œI said to the lads when we were in the huddle before the shoot-out: β€˜He'll save a couple.’ He's a good keeper. I was confident he would step up. I'm glad he's in our corner.”

Gore will hope to bounce back from his penalty miss when Rotherham travel to face Cardiff City in League One on Saturday afternoon. The United youngster will also watch on with anticipation when his side discover their Carabao Cup second round opponents on Wednesday evening, with a chance of them facing United in the next round.
