The Knowledge | PSG - everything you need to know about the UEFA Super Cup

We proudly take our place in the UEFA Super Cup for the first time when we face PSG in Udine, Italy this evening (8pm UK).

UEFA's traditional season-opening showpiece pits the Champions League winners against the UEFA Europa League winners, this time hosted at Udinese's Stadio Friuli.

So, how did the event come about - and why, having won the UEFA Cup in 1972 and 1984, haven't we featured before?

History of the UEFA Super Cup

-----------------------------

The competition was the brainchild of Anton Witkamp, then a reporter and later sports editor of Dutch newspaper _De Telegraaf_, with an idea to decide definitively the top club side in Europe by pitting the European Cup winners against the Cup Winners' Cup winners- the reason we didn't feature after winning the UEFA Cup in 1972 and 1984. Ajax took on Rangers in 1972 and won 6-3 on aggregate over two legs.

The competition still took time to take off but eventually found a permanent home in Monaco, where it was staged between 1998-2012. There was also a change in 1999, following the final staging of the Cup Winners' Cup and from 2000, the winners of the UEFA Cup (now UEL) challenged the Champions League victors. The trophy is now contested in a different European city each year - this will be the 50th edition of the UEFA Super Cup.

PSG's sole previous UEFA Super Cup appearance ended in a 9-2 aggregate defeat by Juventus in the 1996 edition - they are the only French club to have appeared in the competition.

They qualified this time around after a 4-0 masterclass against Inter to lift the Champions League in May.
