Man United: Three of the Best Wins Over Arsenal

Manchester United and Arsenal open their Premier League campaigns this Sunday as the Red Devils host the Gunners at Old Trafford.

The two clubs have met 243 times since their first clash as Newton Heath and Woolwich Arsenal in 1894 - a 3-3 draw watched by just 4,000 spectators.

From that modest beginning, the fixture has grown into one of the most heated and anticipated games of the season as both clubs strive for further success.

Of those 243 fixtures Man United have come out on top on 102 occasions with Arsenal securing 90 victories against the Reds.

51 of the games have finished level, including the last meeting between the pair when Ruben Amorim's men were held to a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford in March.

Ahead of Sunday's encounter here is a look at three of the best wins the Manchester side have secured against their North London counterparts.

Man United 8-2 Arsenal, 28th August 2011

A record-breaking rout from Sir Alex Ferguson's United inflicted Arsenal's heaviest defeat since 1896 as they smashed home eight goals at the Theatre of Dreams.

Goals from Danny Welbeck, Wayne Rooney, Ashley Young and Luis Nani gave United a commanding 4-1 lead heading into the break.

The performance showcased the clubs attacking depth and forward power in the early post Cristiano Ronaldo era following the Portuguese legends move to Real Madrid.

Park Ji-Sung added a fifth for the home side before late goals from Rooney and Young secured the clubs biggest win against Arsene Wenger's side in their history.

Striker Robin Van Persie, who scored for Arsenal in the defeat, would make the switch to Manchester the next season, helping the club to their 20th league title.

Despite the dominant victory over his old foe, Ferguson showed his class in a post-match interview with Sky Sports, sharing his support to Arsenal who had been ravaged with injuries heading into the contest.

"You have to look at Arsenal team as a really weakened team, we should win these games but we've still got to do the job" said Ferguson.

He added, "We could have scored more but you don't want to score more when Arsenal have got a weakened team like that, we're satisfied with the result."

Man United 6-1 Arsenal, 25th February 2001

A ruthless opening half demolition from United all but ended the visitors' title hopes in 2001 as Ferguson's men produced a clinical display to defeat Wenger's outfit.

Dwight Yorke began the first half rout, netting a hat trick in the opening 22 minutes of the fixture before goals from captain Roy Keane and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made it 5-0 before the break.

Teddy Sheringham added a sixth following a consolation goal from Sylvain Wiltord to secure a dominant three points against their title rivals.

United went on to secure a third consecutive Premier League title, finishing 10 points ahead of Arsenal who had finished as runners up in each of those campaigns.

Arsenal 2-4 Man United, 1st February 2005

A fixture known famously for the pre match tunnel bust up between Patrick Viera and United captain Keane showcased the clubs resilience in the most heated era of the rivalry with their North London opponents.

Viera had given the hosts an early lead before Ryan Giggs struck to draw the game level in a hostile atmosphere Highbury Stadium.

Dennis Bergkamp restored the lead for the home side heading into the break in what became a famous night in the career of star-boy Ronaldo.

The then 20-year-old winger struck twice in five minutes to turn the game on its head, cementing himself as a standout talent in the top flight.

Defender John O'Shea struck in added time, lobbing keeper Jens Lehmann to secure all three points for United away to their bitter rivals.
