August 13 – Gianluigi Donnarumma has announced his departure from Saint-Germain, pointing the finger at manager Luis Enrique, with whom he won the Champions League last season, as the reason for his exit.
“To the special Paris fans, from the first day I arrived, I gave everything – on and off the pitch – to earn my place and defend the goal of Paris Saint-Germain,” wrote Donnarumma on Instagram. “Unfortunately someone has decided that I can no longer be part of the group and contribute to the team’s success. I am disappointed and disheartened.”
PSG manager Enrique has axed the goalkeeper from the squad for the Uefa Super Cup against Tottenham Hotspur, the winners of the Europa League, in Udine, Italy, on Wednesday. At a news conference, he said: “I am supported by my club and we are trying to find the best solution.”
“It is a difficult decision. I only have praise for Donnarumma. He is one of the very best goalkeepers out there and an even better man. But we were looking for a different profile. It’s very difficult to take these types of decisions.”
On Saturday, PSG acquired goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier from Lille, a name brought in to become the club’s number one in a deal reportedly worth €40 million and €15 million in potential bonuses.
Last season, Donnarumma played an instrumental role in PSG’s conquest of their maiden Champions League, with big saves in matches against Liverpool, Aston Villa and Arsenal. Donnarumma had one year left on his contract and wanted a pay raise. He is one of the squad’s highest earners at €850,000 a month, but reportedly refused to accept the new salary structure that sporting director Luis Campos introduced.
Donnarumma added: “I hope to have the opportunity to look the fans at the Parc des Princes in the eyes one more time and say goodbye as it should be done.”
“If that doesn’t happen, I want you to know that your support and affection mean the world to me and I will never forget it. I will always carry with me the memory of all the emotions, the magical nights and of you, who made me feel at home.”
Following the European Super Cup, PSG will open their domestic season with a trip to Nantes on Sunday.
