Sunderland 'excitement' as Liverpool 'transfer target' signs new long-term contract

SUNDERLAND youngster Trey Ogunsuyi has committed his future to the club by signing a new long-term contract, ending any transfer uncertainty surrounding the striker.

Liverpool were heavily linked with Ogunsuyi earlier this year, but the 18-year-old - who has been at Sunderland since he was 10 - says he was desperate to "continue his journey" at the Stadium of Light and has now signed a new three-year contract.

Ogunsuyi has worked his way through the ranks in recent seasons, scoring 15 goals in 20 outings for the Under-18s and Under-21s last season.

He was a regular in the first team matchday squad last term and made his competitive debut against Stoke City in January.

Ogunsuyi has continued to impress behind the scenes and been heavily involved in Sunderland's preparations for the coming Premier League season.

“I’m buzzing to have signed a new contract," said the teenager.

"I’ve been at this club since I was 10 years old so to continue my journey here is amazing.

"It’s always what you dream of as a Sunderland fan so when I got to play for the first-team, it was surreal, so I’m very grateful.”

Sunderland's academy manager Robin Nicholls said: “We are delighted to agree a new contract with Trey, continuing his time with the club for a further significant period.

"Kristjaan \[Speakman\], Flo \[Ghisolfi\] and I prioritise the future of this club and ensuring our most talented academy players are rewarded for their progress is an essential part of this.

"To this end, Trey joins several of our other young players who have signed their contracts over the past few months.

"Trey is an exciting player who has been handed his senior competitive debut by Régis already, spent this pre-season training and playing with the first team, and is regularly selected for the Belgium youth national teams.

"We are excited to continue executing the plan for his development and help him towards fulfilling the potential that he is showing.”
