Dominic Calvert-Lewin is set to join a new club a month and a half after his release from Everton.
Calvert-Lewin was linked with a move to Newcastle United with the club previously holding an interest in the 11-time England international.
But with the departure of Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak’s strike, signing Calvert-Lewin on a free transfer would be the harbinger of a disastrous transfer window for The Magpies, viewed as a last resort.
While the 28-year-old has admirers at Newcastle, the club have opted to stay clear of the striker to pursue more premium targets this summer. It marks a U-turn on the striker, whom they had previously attempted to sign from Everton.

Leeds United strike Dominic Calvert-Lewin deal - medical imminent
Newly-promoted Premier League side Leeds United have reportedly reached an agreement to sign Calvert-Lewin on a free transfer.
The Athletic have reported that Calvert-Lewin has agreed a deal in principle to join Leeds.
The 28-year-old, who scored 71 goals in 274 appearances for Everton, is set to undergo a medical at Leeds’ Thorp Arch training ground and finalise the move ahead of the season opener. Leeds mark their Premier League return with a Monday Night Football match against, you guessed it, Everton at Elland Road.
After nine years at Everton, Calvert-Lewin could make his debut against his former club next week.
But his imminent move to Leeds will be seen as good news for Newcastle as they push forward with other striker targets.
Newcastle United looking to sign 19-goal star
The Magpies are set to press forward with the signing of Yoane Wissa from Brentford as a top target. Although initially identified as a replacement for Callum Wilson, who has since joined West Ham United, Wissa could be tasked with leading the line for Newcastle this coming season, depending on how the final weeks of the transfer window unfold.
The DR Congo international scored 19 Premier League goals for Brentford last season with only Liverpool’s golden boot winner, Mohamed Salah, scoring more from open play.
With Isak unavailable, Newcastle are heading into the new season without an established senior striker. Anthony Gordon is likely to lead the line at Aston Villa on Saturday (12:30pm kick-off).
As a result, Newcastle could look to sign another striker in addition to Wissa with a big-money move for Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson mooted but yet to progress.
In the meantime, Newcastle are looking to find a satisfactory resolution to Isak’s situation sooner rather than later.
