Everton have many traditions that have followed the Merseyside club throughout their history.

Despite Everton’s recent fights for survival, they are easily one of the biggest clubs in English football.

As a result of their success, many traditions have since been established, including the adaption of Z-Cars as their anthem.

Now, Goodison News has explored how this came to be and why it still remains.

Everton’s use of Z-Cars’ anthem dates back to the 1960s

Going back to before Everton used the tune, the creation of the anthem happened in January 1962 as part of the Z-Car TV series.

MORE TOFFEES STORIES

This show proved to be popular among UK audiences, depicting a gritty police show in Lancashire.

However, there were plenty of links to Merseyside hidden inside the show, with the anthem itself being based on an old Liverpool sea shanty called Johnny Todd, which dates back to 1891.

The Z-Car anthem was briefly replaced in the 1994/95 campaign by, former Everton Chairman Peter Johnson, before it was quickly reinstated due to the unpopularity of the change

Watford also use the tune as their pre-match enterance music

On top of this, Leonard Williams, who was a well-known Everton fan, was also on the cast of the show, portraying Sergeant Percy Twentyman. However, the actor unfortunately died in November 1962.

As the Toffees went on to win the league in the 1962/63 campaign, the Z-Car song was adopted by supporters, not only due to its popularity among the Goodison Park faithful, but also in memory of Williams.

Everton have already introduced Z-Cars anthem to the Hill Dickinson Stadium

Everton played their first match in front of fans at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on 9 August.

This saw the Toffees lose 1-0 to Roma in a disappointing afternoon before the start of the new Premier League season.

However, one of the biggest highlights was the iconic Z-Cars theme being played at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

It was a fantastic moment, as Everton looks to quickly make their new stadium feel like home.

Hopefully, this tradition will continue long into the Toffees’ stay at their new ground and help finally end their trophy drought.
