‘Imminent’ - Fabrizio Romano provides Newcastle United update as £40m Aston Villa deal agreed

Newcastle United failed to sign top striker target Benjamin Sesko last week.

Newcastle United will sign Jacob Ramsey for £40million but there are no further striker updates beyond Yoane Wissa.

As reported by NewcastleWorld earlier today, the Magpies are close to a breakthrough for Aston Villa star Ramsey. The Magpies have been a midfielder light since selling Sean Longstaff to Leeds United earlier in the window.

Those concerns in the engine room amplified when Joe Willock picked up an injury during pre-season. With defender Malick Thiaw arriving from AC Milan, Newcastle have acted swiftly to tie up a deal for Ramsey.

Newcastle United striker hunt

NewcastleWorld also understands the ambition is to have Wissa through the door before the season opener at Villa Park. One offer - worth around £25million - has already been rejected.

There is confidence that Brentford will play ball at £35million, with the 28-year-old desperate to join the Magpies. Liverpool fans hopeful of any Wissa movement having a domino effect on Alexander Isak’s future should think again.

His arrival would be a replacement for Callum Wilson, who left on a free transfer last month. The chances of Isak - currently on a de facto strike at Newcastle - leaving are diminishing by the day.

Fabrizio Romano update and striker options

A lack of options on the market has made finding a successor difficult. If the Magpies signed Benjamin Sesko - who joined Manchester United - this would have likely triggered Isak’s exit.

Responding to GiveMeSport, Italian sports journalist Fabrizio Romano laughed off the idea of Newcastle buying Crystal Palace hitman Jean-Philippe Mateta. He said: "There are three names per day in Newcastle for the striker position. At the moment, the only imminent deal is Jacob Ramsey.

Eddie Howe makes transfer vow

Eddie Howe backed Newcastle to still enjoy a positive transfer window despite a string of setbacks. He told reporters: “Yes, it can. I have said many times in reply to that question, everyone rates transfer windows when the windows shut and gives it, 'That's a 10 and that's a one.'

“We didn't sign many players last summer and everyone said, 'It's a disastrous window and PSR is affecting our long-term success', and we go and have one of the best seasons in recent memory, so signing players doesn't guarantee everything.

“It can - if you get it right - obviously take your squad forward to a different area. We are in a position where we haven't recruited for so long, we are very keen to add new stimulus to the group. Change is sometimes a really good thing for the squad.

“But if we had to go with the squad that we have into the season, I would do that very proudly and I'd bank on the lads proving everybody wrong again."
