Who is Tom Dundon: Meet the new Trail Blazers owner

Tom Dundon is a 53-year-old American billionaire businessman, investor in sports and financial services, and the owner and CEO of the Carolina Hurricanes, now set to become the new owner of the Portland Trail Blazers.

NHL Carolina Hurricanes owner Tom Dundon has reportedly agreed to purchase the NBA franchise Portland Trail Blazers from the estate of Paul G. Allen for a valuation exceeding $4 billion. But who is he?

Dundon, 53, is an American billionaire businessman specializing in financial services, real estate, and sports entertainment, with a net worth estimated between $1.2 and $1.7 billion.

He is the chairman and managing partner of Dundon Capital Partners in Dallas, Texas, and the sole owner and CEO of the Carolina Hurricanes.

He became the majority owner of the Hurricanes in January 2018, purchasing 52% of the team and the operating rights to PNC Arena for $420 million. In June 2021, Dundon acquired all remaining minority shares, becoming the franchise's sole owner.

In addition to hockey, Dundon has invested heavily in pickleball, serving as chairman of Pickleball.com and the majority owner of both the PPA Tour and Major League Pickleball.

He was also involved in the former Alliance of American Football.

Born in New York and raised in Texas, Dundon's investment group includes Blue Owl Capital co-president Marc Zahr and Collective Global co-CEO Sheel Tyle.

The group plans to keep the franchise in Portland once NBA approval for the Blazers sale is secured, with Dundon set to become the team's new governor.
