Jarrad Branthwaite will miss the start of Everton’s season after breaking down with an injury this week.
Branthwaite, 23, has been one of Everton’s best players in recent years and being without him for an extended spell is a huge blow for David Moyes.
The Blues manager has already been made to sweat over the England defender’s fitness this summer after missing the bulk of his side’s pre-season friendlies.
Branthwaite wasn’t included in Everton’s tour of the USA due to a hamstring injury and despite being on course to play on Monday night against Leeds, the centre-back has suffered a setback.

Branthwaite to miss first Merseyside Derby of the season
It was first reported on Wednesday that Branthwaite has suffered a fresh hamstring injury in Everton training.
MORE TOFFEES STORIES
The Daily Mail have now reported that the ex-Carlisle defender sustained his injury “during routine sprinting drills” and could be ruled out “until the end of September”.
It is understood that Branthwaite aggravated the same hamstring that he injured against Southampton in May.
It means that Branthwaite could miss at least seven matches, including the trip to Anfield to play Liverpool on 20 September.
Opponent Date Competition

Mansfield (H) w/c 25 Aug Carabao Cup Second Round
Wolves (A) 30 Aug Premier League
Aston Villa (H) 13 Sep Premier League
TBC 15 Sep/22 Sep Carabao Cup Third Round
Liverpool (A) 20 Sep Premier League
West Ham (H) 29 Sep Premier League
Branthwaite could miss the Merseyside Derby alongside seven other potential fixtures.
Branthwaite will also miss England’s World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Serbia on 6 September and 9 September, respectively.
Branthwaite signed a new Everton contract on 2 July after being strongly linked with a move away from Merseyside.
It was a real statement of intent by The Friedkin Group, who’ve made some big moves since becoming the Everton owners at the start of the year.
Unfortunately, the excitement that buzzed around that deal has quickly faded out after around six weeks, thanks to these continuous hamstring issues.

Branthwaite’s Everton injury record
Branthwaite’s not normally suffered hamstring injuries.
According to transfermarkt, the defender has mainly had issues with his groin, missing 21 matches in the 2024/25 season thanks to an injury that led to surgery.
He went off against Southampton in the last game of last season with a hamstring injury, something he’s not had since his 2022/23 loan spell at PSV Eindhoven, when he only missed four games.
Losing Branthwaite is certainly a blow for Moyes and his men.
James Tarkowski is returning from hamstring surgery himself, so preparation for the trip to Leeds next Monday could require more cotton wool for Moyes’ defenders.
