Manchester United midfielder Sekou Kone was stretchered off during the National League Cup game.

The first Manchester United under-21 fixture of the 2025/26 season has been overshadowed by an injury to Sekou Kone.

Manchester United were taking on Tamworth in the National League Cup, with the score 0-0 when Kone was injured.

United were defending a corner when Kone went down after an apparent clash of heads late in the first half.

Match suspended for Sekou Kone injury

Players from both teams were taken off the pitch while medical staff treated Sekou Kone on the pitch for more than 15 minutes, with the game abandoned.

He was stretchered off after lengthy medical treatment, with Tamworth issuing a statement.

“We can confirm that Sekou Kone has been stretchered off after a clash of heads earlier in the game. Everyone at Tamworth Football Club wish the young man a speedy recovery.”

Kone was given further medical treatment at the stadium, before later being transported to hospital.

The full extent of the injury to Kone remains unclear, with United taking the incident seriously.

The match was abandoned because there needed to be an available ambulance on site at all times, and Kone was being treated inside the one assigned. The match will be replayed at a later date.

Sekou Kone entering second year at Manchester United

Sekou Kone signed for Manchester United one year ago, after impressing at the FIFA Under-17 World Cup for Mali. He had been wanted by Barcelona before the deal with United went through.

He spent the season with the academy, and it remains unclear whether he will be sent out on loan before the upcoming transfer deadline. The first priority now is that he makes a swift recovery from this injury.

The midfielder was training with the first team and this fixture against Tamworth appeared set to give him valuable game time.

Kone went on tour with the first team squad for pre-season, although did not play a single minute. He did play on the postseason tour of Asia.
