Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino has tipped new signing Viktor Gyokeres to have a major impact at the Emirates, praising the striker’s work ethic and professionalism since joining the club.
The Gunners ended a summer-long search for a genuine centre-forward last month, securing Gyokeres from Sporting CP in a £64 million deal despite strong competition from Manchester United. The 27-year-old Sweden international, who scored an astonishing 97 goals in 102 appearances for the Portuguese side, signed a contract keeping him in north London until 2030.
Arsenal faced criticism last season for failing to address their striking options, extending their run without a major trophy to five years. Manager Mikel Arteta made acquiring a prolific No.9 a top priority, and Gyokeres became the marquee signing of the window.

“Viktor is such a good striker with his own tools. He’s going to be a massive player for us, so we’ll have to adapt to his qualities and find him in the right spots,” Merino toldTNT Sports. “For him, he’ll have to adapt to our principles, but I’m sure it’s going to be a good relationship.”
While Gyokeres’ Premier League readiness has been questioned in some quarters, Merino is confident his teammate will thrive. “Hopefully loads of goals, that’s what he does,” he said.

“He’s strong, quick, and can stretch defences, but what has surprised me most is off the pitch. He’s humble, professional, always ready to learn, and already adapting well.”
Merino also spoke highly of fellow summer recruit Martin Zubimendi, who joined from Real Sociedad for £60m. The pair have played together for club and country, and Merino believes the midfielder will be an instant hit.
“He’s an amazing player and a good friend,” Merino said. “He’s shown his quality in just a few games. He’s learning the language, but the most important language he already knows with the ball. Everyone loves him here and I’m sure he’ll play a huge role.”
Arsenal will hope the arrivals of Gyokeres and Zubimendi can provide the extra firepower and control needed to mount a serious title challenge this season.
