Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson is one of the most recognizable names and faces in the NFL, both on and off the field. With all of that celebrity comes an immense amount of marketing opportunities to grow his personal brand.
It turns out that those branding battles off the field can be just as competitive as the games on the field, and just like the games, you can’t win them all. Jackson filed a lawsuit last year against former Dallas Cowboys legend Troy Aikman over the use of the number 8, which adorns the jerseys of both stars, but it seems he’s decided to call it quits.
“In a decision to dismiss the case published Tuesday, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office revealed that the two-time NFL Most Valuable Player filed to withdraw the challenge Monday after originally filing the challenge in July 2024,” the Baltimore Sun reported.
Fans reacted to the news on social media.
“Losing on the field and in the court. Not everyone’s a winner. I encourage you guys to go to listen to the interview where Lamar admits nerves that go back to his peewee football days. Guys a born loser. He’s great person and athlete but a loser,” one fan wrote on Twitter.
“If you go to buy a ravens jersey with the name Jackson on the back and accidentally buy a cowboys jersey with the name Aikman on the back then that’s on you,” another person added.
“That’s the most backwards thing I’ve heard of today. Come on Lamar. Show some love to the guys that came before you,” someone else added.
Hopefully, this isn’t an omen of losses to come this regular season.
