Blow for Sunderland as 28-year-old Englishman chooses to join Leeds instead

According to a report from talkSPORT, Dominic Calvert-Lewin will continue to feature in the Premier League as he has an agreement in place to join Leeds United. The former Everton ace turned down a significant offer from Sunderland and has decided to play for the Yorkshire-based outfit.

After making a name for himself at Sheffield United, Calvert-Lewin joined the Toffees back in 2016. During his nine-year-long stint at Goodison Park, he was involved in a total of 273 matches and ended up contributing towards 93 goals.

The 28-year-old parted ways with Everton in June upon the expiry of his contract. While he was at the peak of his powers during the 2020/21 season, the last few seasons haven’t gone according to plan for him, as he has struggled with injuries and hasn’t been in the best of form.

Despite that, there has been no shortage of interest in the English international. Multiple top clubs have been keen on signing the free agent. Newcastle United and Manchester United were both linked with him at one point in the transfer window.

Leeds have won the race to sign Calvert-Lewin

Meanwhile, Sunderland were desperate to have him in their squad as they wanted more firepower in the final third. The Black Cats were ready to make him their highest-paid player, but the 28-year-old turned down the opportunity to play for them.

He has instead decided to link up with Leeds United. The Yorkshire-based outfit were initially pushing for the signature of Fulham ace Rodrigo Muniz. But once it became clear that he wouldn’t be moving to Elland Road, they shifted their focus towards free agent Calvert-Lewin.

Leeds have managed to convince him about their project, and he is all set to lead the line for Daniel Farke’s team. While they were interested in the 28-year-old towards the start of the transfer window, they were initially put off by his wage demands. However, both parties have finally reached a common ground. Meanwhile, Sunderland have ended up securing the services of Chelsea youngster Marc Guiu on loan.
