Arsenal legend Tony Adams has called on Mikel Arteta to make what he describes as a “really big call” in the upcoming season — handing the club captaincy to Declan Rice. The former Gunners skipper believes the decision could be pivotal in Arsenal’s push to win the Premier League, arguing that Rice’s leadership qualities surpass those of current captain Martin Ødegaard.
Speaking passionately about the issue, Adams said, “Mikel Arteta’s got a really big call to make this year & he hasn’t done it. The call is to make Declan Rice the captain. I think he’s better than Arteta, I think he’s a winner. You’re NOT going to win the league with Ødegaard as captain, I’m sorry.”
Adams, who captained Arsenal to multiple league titles during his illustrious career, is no stranger to the demands of leadership at the highest level. He believes Rice embodies the mentality, resilience, and influence needed to guide Arsenal through the pressures of a title race. Since joining from West Ham United in 2023, Rice has quickly established himself as one of the team’s most consistent performers, delivering standout displays in midfield and demonstrating a relentless work ethic.
While Ødegaard has been widely praised for his technical brilliance and creativity, Adams suggests that the Norwegian’s leadership style may not have the same impact as Rice’s more vocal, assertive approach. For Adams, the captain’s armband is not just about talent, but about driving standards, inspiring teammates, and instilling belief during crucial moments.

Rice’s influence was evident throughout last season as Arsenal pushed Liverpool all the way in the title race, falling just short on the final day. His presence in midfield has brought both defensive solidity and attacking drive, with the England international also scoring important goals in big matches.
Arteta, however, has remained loyal to Ødegaard, who was appointed captain in 2022. The Norwegian playmaker has led by example with his professionalism, composure, and consistent performances, and is a popular figure in the dressing room. Changing captains could risk unsettling the squad, something Arteta will undoubtedly weigh up carefully.
Yet, Adams’ comments have reignited a debate among fans and pundits. Some agree with his assessment that Rice’s personality and on-field authority could make him the ideal captain to take Arsenal to the next level. Others feel that Ødegaard’s calm leadership and rapport with Arteta have already proven effective and should not be disrupted.
As Arsenal prepare for another season with ambitions of dethroning Manchester City, the captaincy question lingers in the background. Whether Arteta heeds Adams’ advice or sticks with his current skipper, the Gunners’ leadership dynamics will be under the microscope in the months ahead. For Adams, though, the answer is clear — to win the league, Rice should lead the way.
