NBA Board of Governors approves Boston Celtics sale

The NBA Board of Governors has unanimously approved the sale of the controlling interests in the Boston Celtics to a group led by Bill Chisholm. The transaction is expected to close shortly, according to the league.

Chisholm’s group will be purchasing a 51 percent stake in the franchise from the Grousbeck family in this first phase of the sale. The remaining shares will be purchased from the team in 2028. Initially, Wyc Grousbeck planned to remain as the team’s lead governor through the 2027-28 season but NBA rules on ownership have changed those plans. Chisholm will become lead governor of the team immediately while Grousbeck will serve as alternative governor and remain as team CEO through 2027-28 when the sale is completed in full.

The Grousbeck family purchased the Celtics for $360 million back in 2002 and will be selling it at a valuation of $6.1 billion to Chisholm’s group, the second highest price ever paid for an NBA franchise. Boston won two championships under Grousbeck’s controlling ownership including 2008 and 2024.

Chisholm’s group includes a number of stakeholders including Aditya Mittal, Robert Hale, Bruce A. Beal Jr. and a private investment firm Sixth Street.

The franchise has undergone a major overhaul this summer with four rotation players lost due to trades and free agency. With Jayson Tatum currently recovering from a torn Achilles injury, the team has dipped under the second apron to avoid roster building penalities under the new CBA and reduce a steep luxury tax bill.
