The Chicago Bears brought in new head coach Ben Johnson to help bring out young quarterback Caleb Williams’ full potential the same way he did with Jared Goff as the offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions.
Jonhson came in and the Bears immidiately made a series of moves to solidify the offensive line charged with protecting Williams. It’s not hard to see why the O-line was a focal point for Johnson and the Bears, as Williams struggled immensely to avoid sacks last year in his rookie season.
However, Bears offensive line coach Dan Roushar has not liked what he’s seen from right tackle Darnell Wright, who had a stellar rookie season that saw him named to the PFWA All-Rookie team in 2023.
”A little bit too inconsistent. There’s moments when we look at it, when he loses focus or fatigue starts to set in, we see a decline in play, but when he’s on point, I’ve seen Darnell do some things that you get excited about,” Roushar said.
“He’s just not been able to stack it play after play after play, which isn’t uncommon for a young player. There are moments where I’ve seen the growth…is it as fast as I want it or he wants it to be? No. My job is to inspire & get him there and understand exactly what we’re doing and challenge him when it’s not right.”
Fans reacted to the Roushar’s words on social media.
“Hopefully it translates. We’ve had people managing position groups rather than coaching them for far too long,” one person wrote on Twitter.
“This coaching staff is very refreshing,” another fan added.
“This coaching staff is extremely open and talks about coachable moments, then actually addresses them, this is the biggest flip flop I’ve seen in a staff in a very long time,” someone else wrote.
It’ll be interesting to see how Roushar responds to the tough love
