Mohamed Salah has paid tribute to Darwin Nunez for displaying "heart in everything you did" at Liverpool following the Uruguayan's departure to Al-Hilal last week.

The 26 year old brought the curtain down on his three-year stay at Anfield last week after the Reds struck a £46 million agreement with the Saudi Pro League club.

Taking to X on Wednesday evening, Salah expressed his gratitude to Nunez for his contributions on Merseyside. He wrote: "I consider myself lucky to have had you as a teammate and friend. You were always very real and brought so much good energy wherever you went.

"You made us laugh and showed heart in everything you did. You will be missed and I wish you the best in your new club."

Throughout his Merseyside tenure, the Uruguayan netted 40 goals across 143 outings to help Liverpool secure the Community Shield, League Cup and Premier League.

Following a stellar 2021-22 campaign at Benfica, Nunez arrived at Liverpool in June 2022 in a potential club-record transfer worth £85m, reports the Liverpool Echo.

However, despite finding the net on his final match against Manchester Cityin the Community Shield, Nunez battled for consistency during his maiden campaign at Anfield, managing just nine Premier League strikes as Liverpool stumbled to fifth place in the table. During his sophomore season, the Uruguayan displayed glimpses of progress as Liverpool launched a title bid for two-thirds of the campaign.

Following Jurgen Klopp's departure in May 2024, however, Nunez found it difficult to impress Arne Slot, with the Dutch boss favouring Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota as his attacking spearheads.

As a result, the former Benfica player only started eight Premier League matches last season as Liverpool secured the Premier League title.

Upon confirmation of his departure, Nunez took to Instagram to express his feelings. He wrote: "Thank you, Liverpool. Three years on, it's time to say goodbye. I'll take with me countless memories that will live with me forever.

"I leave with a full heart, thanks to the love of a crowd that never let me down and always had my back - through the highs and through the lows.

"Liverpool will always be part of who I am. I'll miss you more than words can say. To all the staff and my teammates - thank you and all the very best for the future."
