Seahawks plan to play starters in preseason game vs Chiefs

Football fans in the Pacific Northwest may get their first look at quarterback Sam Darnold and a handful of other new players Friday night – although it could be a short one.

Head coach Mike Macdonald told reporters at practice Wednesday that the team plans to play its starters in Friday’s preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs at Lumen Field.

“Might be a couple guys that will vary based on whether they get out there or not,” Macdonald said. “We’re still kind of working through it right now.”

Macdonald did not reveal how long starters would be in the game.

“Our guys are going to start the game out and (we will) see how long it goes,” Macdonald said.

The Seahawks sat most of their starters during their preseason opener against the Las Vegas Raiders last week. There were a few exceptions as Seattle let some of its rookies and younger players who are expected to start or play significant roles this season get in the game, namely first-round pick guard Grey Zabel and fellow rookies tight end Elijah Arroyo, safety Nick Emmanwori and wide receiver Tory Horton.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said Wednesday morning that star quarterback Patrick Mahomes will likely sit out during Friday’s contest, meaning Seattle has a good chance to see a lot of former WSU star Gardner Minshew at quarterback.
