Sometimes the best moments in football happen is all the little moments off the field.

That is what went down Wednesday when Jalen Hurts spotted Browns rookie Shedeur Sanders walking after getting hurt during their joint practice. Hurts pulled up in a golf cart and told him, “Hop in, kid.”

Sanders had tweaked his oblique early in practice and was done for the day. Instead of heading to the locker room when practice ended, he hung around to talk with Hurts. The conversation went on for a while before Hurts gave Sanders that golf cart ride back to the building. The moment was caught on video and quickly made the rounds on social media.

Hurts declined to get into specifics about their discussion. “I’ll keep the conversation intimate,” he told reporters. “We had a very lengthy conversation. He came to me and just wanted to talk. I’m always there… giving my perspective on what I see and how I’ve gone about things. Ultimately, it takes a great deal of patience and hard work and a sense of resilience. You’ve got to want it.”

It is not surprising behavior from Hurts, who has been a class act since arriving in Philadelphia. But it still stood out to see a Super Bowl MVP taking time with a fifth-round rookie from another team dealing with his second injury in less than two weeks.

Sanders had been riding high after a solid debut against Carolina, throwing for a couple of touchdowns. Then the oblique injury happened, and suddenly he was back to wondering when he would get another shot. The Browns’ quarterback room is banged up, with Kenny Pickett and Dillon Gabriel also nursing hamstring injuries.

Eagles fans on social media were eating it up, with some joking that Hurts should just keep driving and bring Sanders to Philadelphia. Both quarterbacks transferred in college, both dealt with questions about their NFL potential, and both know what it is like to have people doubt them.

The difference is Hurts proved the doubters wrong: two Super Bowl appearances, one championship, a Super Bowl MVP, and a massive contract — not bad for a guy who started his Eagles career as a backup.

Sanders is listed as day to day with the oblique strain and likely will not play in Saturday’s preseason game against the Eagles. Whether he remembers what Hurts told him more than anything from that game is a safe bet.
