LAWTON, Okla. (KSWO) - The Lawton Community is celebrating Julian Davis, who recently made the OKC Thunder dance team.
Davis shared what the audition process and being named to the 2025-2026 O’City Crew dance teams mean to not only him but also his family.
“From Little old Lawton and then going to Oklahoma City I talk to a lot of the other dancers there too and I’m like yeah I’m from Lawton and then some of them, they’re like are ‘Lawton like that tiny town’ and then others are like ‘Lawton what’s that?’ they never heard of Lawton so it kind of gives me a little bit more motivation to keep going and really give it my all because I really want to showcase like what Lawton has.”
Davis explains what his mindset was like when focusing on his goal.
“For me, my mindset was just go like just go. I finally have the opportunity to chase my dream, and now that I have the opportunity, I’m not looking back, so that was my mind. I just go and have fun.”
Davis spoke about the audition experience and explained a little about what the process is like.
“We had the first round of auditions and the second round of auditions. And, in between then, we got time to rehearse the audition choreography if you passed the first round, so that was really kind of a good breath of fresh air too, to kind of just take it in, take in the peace and really make my own and get it connected with my body.”
Davis shared his thought process and excitement, speaking about what needs to be done in preparation for his upcoming project
“Now it’s just like uniform fittings, and then after that we have our first practice of coming up in September, so I’m very excited about that. Excited to be back with the dancers that I did get to meet and I did make it so it’s gonna be a really fun journey I’m gonna obviously keep improving myself as a human being and improving myself as my own dancer to just really find myself I guess is my main goal throughout all of this and to really push myself to see where I can go with it.”
Davis offered some advice for those pursuing dance as a career.
“Don’t lose yourself and don’t lose your love for it in the process. I think that’s one big thing. I’m also trying to get over it, not trying to lose myself in the process, especially with it now becoming a profession.”
Davis shared his appreciation for his support system that helped him follow his dreams.
“I’m really really thankful and grateful to just be the support, but also it’s a really big thing, especially my family, because no one in our family, well, my family, has done anything in the creative field or done anything like really pursue their dreams like to the fullest so it’s new for me. It’s new for my family. It feels pretty good to get the love and support from those people.”
Davis shared one of his long-term goals and explained how his hometown plays a part in it.
“Lawton is a hidden gym when it comes to talent, and I want to be able to get to a point where I can come back and bring the hidden talent and give ‘em that spotlight.”
