Leicester City officially leave door open for £30m Newcastle United transfer

Newcastle United have been linked with Leicester City midfielder Bilal El Khannouss.

Leicester City manager Marti Cifuentes has admitted he could be helpless to keep Bilal El Khannouss amid reported Newcastle United interest.

The Telegraph reported earlier this week that Newcastle are considering a move for the Foxes star. El Khannouss enjoyed a breakout season for Leicester in the Premier League last year despite suffering relegation.

He was a rare bright spark and turned heads on the opening day of the Championship campaign with two assists against Sheffield Wednesday. Reports have suggested Newcastle could tempt Leicester with a £25million bid before the transfer window slams shut.

Leicester City manager makes admission

Speaking to reporters, City boss Cifuentes conceded he may be unable to keep the 21-year-old at the King Power Stadium. He said: “We always have these conversations and always as a manager you have some players you might think are more important for the way you want to play.

“But as well you have to understand there is the reality in terms of the value that the market gives to certain players. But we do have these kinds of conversations. All good players will attract interest. It’s not just about Bilal, who is an excellent player. He did very well providing the two assists. But the process will always be the same.

“If someone leaves, it is my job to try to see how we can use the strengths and the quality in the squad. If I think we need something, I will look into the academy to see if we can find a player who can do this role. If not, then we go to the market.”

Eddie Howe can save Newcastle United window

Eddie Howe remains confident that Newcastle can enjoy a healthy transfer window despite several high-profile knockbacks. He said at the weekend: “Yeah, it can. It can. I've said many times in reply to that question. Everyone, when the window's shut, gives it a rating, that's a 10 and that's a one.

“We didn't sign many players last summer and everyone said it's a disastrous window, PSR is affecting our long-term success and we're going to have one of the best seasons in recent memory.

“So, signing players doesn't guarantee everything. It does, if you get it right, obviously can take your squad forward to a different area. We're in a position, I think, where we haven't recruited for so long. We are very keen to add new stimulus to the group. Change is sometimes a really good thing for the squad. But if we had to go with the squad that we have into the season, I would do that very proudly .And I'd bank on the lads proving everybody wrong again.”
