Former Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero says he is eager to see how Arsenal summer signing Viktor Gyokeres adapts to the Premier League, predicting the Swede could emerge as a serious Golden Boot contender in his debut season.

Aguero, who retired in 2021 after a glittering career featuring five league titles and 184 Premier League goals for City, described Gyokeres as a potential “game-changer” following his prolific spell at Sporting CP. The 27-year-old scored 43 goals last season and arrived at Arsenal in a £64 million deal in July, signing a five-year contract.

“I’m curious to see how he adapts,” Aguero said ahead of the 2025/26 campaign. “Salah’s name should be brought up when we talk about the Golden Boot, same with Isak. And players arriving in the Premier League with a massive tally like Gyokeres at Arsenal have a chance to shake things up.”

Gyokeres’ goalscoring exploits in Portugal have already earned him a nomination for the 2025 Ballon d’Or, and Arsenal fans hope his arrival will help end the club’s 22-year wait for a league title.

Aguero believes the Gunners will be in the mix for honours this season, tipping them for a top-four finish alongside Manchester City, Liverpool, and Chelsea. “Not in order, I think Man City, Liverpool, Arsenal, and Chelsea,” he added, while placing his former club as favourites.

Despite the excitement, some remain cautious.Former Arsenal captain Sol Campbell has suggested that while Gyokeres strengthens the side, more creativity from midfield may be required to dethrone Manchester City.

The striker’s high-profile transfer has also been overshadowed by off-field headlines in Sweden, where police are investigating a shooting in Stockholm linked to an alleged blackmail attempt connected to his move. Authorities have confirmed Gyokeres is not implicated in the incident.

Arsenal begin their league campaign against Manchester United this weekend, with Gyokeres set to lead the line in his first competitive match in English football since leaving Coventry City in 2023.
