Everton have been hit with a major injury setback ahead of their opening game against Leeds United.
David Moyes will have been delighted to see two quality players added over the last week on Merseyside, but the latest news is not positive.
Jarrad Branthwaite will miss over a month due to injury. The 23-year-old defender has suffered a hamstring issue during a training session at Finch Farm.
With the trip to Elland Road just a matter of days away, this is far from what Everton fans would have been hoping for.
A shift in Everton’s transfer plans could be on the cards, but the Blues are still looking to add another midfielder to their squad.
And one potential departure could open the door for a big-name addition.

It is suggested that Everton could make a move late on in the window for Luiz.
Circumstances may well play a big role in any potential move for the former Aston Villa man, with Nottingham Forest also keen on Luiz.
There is an understanding that Juventus are looking for a package worth in the region of £35m to seal a move for Luiz.
However, Luiz has expressed his desire to return to England, with the midfielder even skipping training earlier this summer.
Armstrong’s exit could lead to Luiz signing
This summer, Armstrong has been keen to impress Moyes with his performances in pre-season.
It would appear that Moyes is not fully convinced that the 18-year-old is ready to make the jump into regular men’s football just yet.
Unfortunately, Armstrong has picked up an injury, which is going to see him miss the start of the new season.
Allowing the youngster to leave this summer would certainly require Everton to strengthen their numbers.
And they could do just that by landing the experienced Juventus wantaway.
