For what feels like the first time in a a decent amount of time, there’s a fairly new Juventus transfer target to talk about. That is Brighton midfielder Matt O’Riley, who was linked with the club last summer but has come to the forefront as we wait to see if Juventus will do any sort of serious business in the final couple of weeks of the summer mercato.
But when it comes to Juventus’ pursuit of the 24-year-old Dane, there is a catch.
Because, yes, there’s always going to be a catch when it comes to anything Juventus might do the rest of the summer.
According to Fabrizio Romano on Wednesday, O’Riley is very much keen on a move to Juventus during the final portion of the transfer window, but there’s a catch: Douglas Luiz, the want-away Brazilian midfielder who is back in Turin after failing to report to preseason training on time, will have to be sold first so that Juventus can actually afford to pay the potential transfer fee for O’Riley. If Juventus are to try and sign O’Riley like it appears they want to after they [reportedly agreed to personal terms with him earlier this week](/juventus-transfer-rumours-news/31441/matt-oriley-juventus-brighton-hove-albion-2025-serie-a-premier-league-summer-transfer-rumors-personal-terms), the desired formula will be a loan with obligation to buy, with Brighton wanting around €30 million total, according to previous reports.
Romano adds that O’Riley is part of a three-player shortlist of potential signings.
This probably doesn’t come as much of a surprise considering Juventus’ summer has been so much about selling before they could actually try and bring somebody in. That is, at least in part, a result of committing so much money to the 2025 summer transfer window with options and obligations to buy from deals that Cristiano Giuntoli did last summer and back in January. (Yep, Lloyd Kelly is still here and Juve paid good money for him to stay beyond the springtime! Good times!)
So to even consider potentially buying O’Riley, Juventus must see Douglas Luiz depart while the summer window is still open. And while it’s probably not to the same extent as Dusan Vlahovic, Luiz’s market is still something that isn’t exactly brimming with potential destinations considering we’ve been hearing about where he might go but haven’t actually heard of many (or any) bids from his desired destination of the Premier League. How much that has to do with his bit of drama a couple of weeks ago and clubs being hesitant, it’s hard to say. But for now, this is another case of a potential Juve incoming transfer being on hold because of another player not being
I guess we just wait. Again. Because that’s what this summer mercato has basically turned into, right?
