Bristol Bears are increasingly hopeful of securing the signature of Welsh international Louis Rees-Zammit upon his return from the NFL.
The 24 year old announced at the end of July that he would be returning to rugby union, after spending the last 18 months attempting to break into American Football. The former Gloucester wing is believed to be a target for the rebel R360 league, but he will need to secure a short-term contract - with the new league, spearheaded by former England World Cup winner Mike Tindall, not guaranteed to launch.
Rees-Zammit's declaration of his return to rugby sparked a rush for his signature, with clubs in England and France showing interest in the 32-cap international.
Newcastle, recently backed by Red Bull, have ruled themselves out of the race this week, while Cardiff have also been linked.
Sources close to Rees-Zammit maintain that all options are still being considered, but WalesOnline understands that Bristol are nearing a deal to secure the high-profile signing ahead of the new Gallagher Prem season.
Rees-Zammit is currently in Florida, enjoying some time with family before returning to the UK.
It's understood that he will proceed with signing for a club upon his return.
A switch to Bristol makes perfect sense for several reasons. The Ashton Gate outfit have demonstrated their ability to promote high-profile talents, as evidenced by American sensation Ilona Maher's successful spell with the women's team last season.
When Rees-Zammit departed rugby union in early 2024, he remained amongst the most recognisable figures in the northern hemisphere - with his profile arguably continuing to rise even whilst away from the sport, given his bid to succeed in the NFL.
Once Rees-Zammit's club future is resolved, he will focus on making his comeback to Test rugby.
Wales have suffered a decline in fortunes since Rees-Zammit's final cap at the 2023 Rugby World Cup.
His final Test outing against Argentina in Marseille signalled the beginning of an 18-Test losing streak for Wales.
New Wales coach Steve Tandy has already left the door ajar for Rees-Zammit to rejoin the squad.
"I think you wouldn't rule anything out," said Tandy last week. "Zammo brings a big effect and excitement by coming back.
"I think it's great for the game. He's gone away to experience something new, which is class, and I'm sure he will be in outstanding physical condition.
"The more players we have available to represent our country the better. That's exciting and makes our job easier.
"It will also make our calls on selection a lot more challenging in terms of selection as we've already got some very good back-three players. Adding Zammo into that makes it even more exciting for not only us, but the fans as well."
Wales are set to face Argentina, Japan, New Zealand and South Africa in the autumn fixtures.
