Manchester City’s pursuit of Gianluigi Donnarumma will only go ahead if long-serving goalkeeper Ederson departs this summer.
City’s surprise interest in Donnarumma emerged this week, with TBR Football reporting that City are in the race along with Chelsea. Manchester United have been linked but have since distanced themselves.
Pep Guardiola’s side don’t necessarily need a new goalkeeper having added James Trafford and Marcus Bettinelli to their squad this summer. However, Stefan Ortega looks set to leave while Ederson is a long-term target for Galatasaray.

TBR Football understand City are open to selling Ederson as he enters the final year of his contract – and Galatasaray are working on a deal. However, it was reported this week that no deal has yet been made for the Brazilian.
If Ederson did leave, that would open the door for Donnarumma to arrive having been told he is no longer part of Paris Saint-Germain’s plans. He was left out of PSG’s UEFA Super Cup squad against Tottenham this week.
Ederson motivated to stay with Man City and win back the Premier League title
In June, Ederson spoke to reporters at the FIFA Club World Cup and insisted any reports linking him with a move away were ’99 per cent fake news.’ He reiterated his desire to stay at the Etihad, saying: “My future is here.”
“Some friends send me a lot of news but 99% is fake news. I understand you guys, he continued. “You need the news to put a like on social media, or rant for the news. I understand but there’s a lot of fake news around my name.

“My head is here. It stays with the city. It gives me everything to go back to the Premier League again and try to win the Champions League as well. My mind is staying in the club.”
At the time, Pep Guardiola said he ‘didn’t know’ what Ederson’s future held this summer. Last year, the goalkeeper was close to a big-money transfer to Saudi Arabia but opted to stay at the Etihad Stadium instead.
Gianluigi Donnarumma free to leave Paris Saint-Germain but future remains uncertain
Speaking before PSG’s UEFA Super Cup win over Tottenham, manager Luis Enrique confirmed it was his decision to remove Donnarumma from the club’s plans ahead of the new season after contract talks broke down. Lucas Chevalier has signed this summer and becomes PSG’s new number one.

“These are always difficult decisions to make, I know. I can only speak positively about Gigio Donnarumma,” Enrique said. “He is one of the best in the world at his position, without a doubt, and even better as a person.
“But we were looking for a different goalkeeper profile. I take 100% responsibility for this difficult decision.”
If a move to City is blocked, Donnarumma’s options may be limited to another Premier League club, with his agent Enzo Raiola telling Sky Italia that PSG’s €50m asking price may only be met by an English club.
