Chelsea donate part of Club World Cup bonuses to Diogo Jota’s family

Chelsea have donated a portion of their team bonuses from winning the Club World Cup to the family of Liverpool striker Diogo Jota and brother Andre Silva.

The Athletic reports that a decision was made between Chelsea and the players to contribute an equal share of their Club World Cup bonuses to Jota’s family.

It comes with Pedro Neto, one of the late Liverpool forward’s close friends, representing Chelsea throughout the tournament.

A total of $15.5 million of the club’s $114.6 million winnings from the Club World Cup has been allocated to the players involved and an equal share of that will be donated to Diogo and Andre’s family.

That will be worth more than $500,000 before any deductions for taxes and conversion.

Neto was offered compassionate leave following former Portugal and Wolves teammate Jota’s death but went on to feature in every subsequent game.

He was therefore unable to attend a funeral in the brothers’ hometown of Gondomar but paid tribute before the quarter-final against Palmeiras and pledged to win the Club World Cup in their honour.

“When I step onto the pitch on Sunday, know that I want to win this competition for Diogo Jota,” he said ahead of the final against Paris Saint-Germain.

“He will always be with me. He will always be remembered. My thoughts are still with him, his brother Andre Silva, and their families. It’s such a difficult moment.

“Diogo immediately stood out to me when I came to England. I was very young and arriving in a new country, and he was one of the key players at Wolves.

“But he helped me and my family a lot, and I learned so much from him about life and football.”

There will be tributes for Jota and his brother before all 10 fixtures in the opening Premier League weekend, with a period of silence to be observed before kickoff.

Liverpool are also set to honour the lives of their No. 20 and his sibling, who both passed away in a car crash in Spain on July 3, with further tributes during their Friday night meeting with Bournemouth.

Wolves will do similar as they prepare to host Man City on Saturday, having also announced plans for a permanent tribute to their former striker at Molineux.
