David Moyes has a unique option for Everton’s visit to Leeds after Jarrad Branthwaite injury -…

Jarrad Branthwaite’s injury has put a spanner in the works for Everton, but David Moyes could have a plan.

In what is the news no Everton fans wanted to hear, Jarrad Branthwaite will be injured for six weeks following a hamstring injury.

Arguably, Moyes’ most important player will now be out for the start of the season, and panic stations could appear.

Due to the defender’s injury, a move for James Justin could step up to give Jake O’Brien the chance to play alongside James Tarkowski.

However, the Toffees boss will already be able to do this, as another option could slot nicely in that right-back role.

It’s such an unfortunate situation for Everton, who are looking to make a bright start in their opening games.

Not having Branthwaite could have a detrimental impact, and defender signings will have been put on red alert.

But the Leeds United opener might not be too much of a panic, as the Scotsman could always play James Garner at right-back.

The 24-year-old has played at full-back at times in his Toffees career, but predominantly in 2023 for the England under-21s, where he shone in the U21 Euros.

After Everton fans aren’t convinced by Garner, maybe the midfielder can convince them from the right side of defence.

Playing Garner in this role could be a risk for the opener at Elland Road, but Moyes hasn’t been left with much choice.

It’s a unique way of looking at things, as the midfielder playing in the role could provide more creativity.

After pre-season, the Scotsman has already utilised the 24-year-old in this position against Man United, which could already hint at his plans.

Moyes spoke after the 2-2 draw to United in pre-season, saying: “We’ve played Jimmy Garner at right wing-back because we’ve not had other people to do the job.

“Jimmy’s a bit more flexible, but we played him a little bit deeper, and I thought as the game went on, he was the one who was still chugging along, and I was pleased with him.”

With this considered, it’s certainly an option on the table for Moyes to explore, as it’s a big decision for such a decisive game.

Garner thinks Everton can finish top half this season, and now he could have a chance to play a key role in kick-starting that aim.
