NBA teams make huge decision on Boston Celtics

The NBA has unanimously approved William Chisholm's $6.1 billion purchase of the Boston Celtics, with the transaction expected to close soon.

The NBA's Board of Governors has unanimously approved the sale of the Boston Celtics to an investor group led by William Chisholm, the league officially announced.

The vote's outcome was never in doubt, but the lack of any opposition underscores the league's support for this purchase. The deal is expected to be finalized soon.

Chisholm, a Massachusetts native and lifelong Celtics fan, reached a tentative agreement in March to buy the franchise for $6.1 billion — a record at the time for the most ever paid for a North American sports team.

That record has since been broken by the $10 billion sale of the Los Angeles Lakers.

Under the agreement, Chisholm's group will first acquire a 51% stake from the Grousbeck family, with the remaining shares set to change hands in 2028.

Once the sale closes, Chisholm will become the team's lead governor, while current governor Wyc Grousbeck will remain as alternate governor and CEO through the 2027-28 season.
