Ex-Spur fan-favorite spotted in town proving one undeniable fact

The San Antonio Spurs organization is known for its winning culture, but there is more to it than hanging championship banners. Players, both past and present, and Spurs fans themselves appreciate aspects beyond the court. This franchise emphasizes teamwork, humility, and a strong bond between players and the community. The Spurs' model of "family" runs deep with anyone close to this team.

Whether players spend their entire careers in San Antonio or just a few seasons, most seem to value their time in the Alamo City, and there was a significant sign of that recently.

Ex-Spur fan-favorite spotted in town, proving one undeniable fact

This past weekend, team reporters were able to get a peek at former Spur Doug McDermott going through a high-effort skills workout in a nearby San Antonio gym. On the campus of Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) in San Antonio, McDermott can be seen intensely working through a shooting circuit workout. McDermott, who re-signed with the Sacramento Kings for $3.6 million in July, has not been with the Spurs since February 2024.

A pure sharp shooter, McDermott was coming off his career-best 14 points per game season when he was first traded to the Spurs in a sign-and-trade deal with the Indiana Pacers in August 2021. When becoming a Spur, he quickly picked up where he left off, especially in December when he scored in double digits in 12 of the 14 games played, averaging 15.2 points per game in that span.

McDermott's catch-and-shoot capabilities were exactly what the team needed, as they entered that 2021-2022 season among the bottom five teams in three-point shooting.

His playing style resembled that of Kyle Korver and J.J. Redick, as all three thrive at moving well without the ball and getting into good positions to shoot. Unfortunately, injuries would eventually take their toll on McDermott, and he was sidelined for the rest of the season in March due to a severe ankle sprain. Over the next two years, Doug served as an occasional spark off the bench for the Spurs and built a strong relationship with the city.

Fast forward to August 2025, and fans are raving about the latest clip of McDermott taking shots in San Antonio. There are countless gyms where McDermott could have worked out, but he chose to take a nearby court in San Antonio, and that says something. As previously mentioned, the bond that an organization and its players build in San Antonio goes beyond basketball and continues even after they are no longer together.

McDermott's display of loyalty further emphasizes what the franchise is striving to build as they enter a new era with Victor Wembanyama and his promising counterparts. With a strong young core, a new full-time head coach, and growing discussions about a potential new arena breaking ground soon, the future looks bright in San Antonio, and every Spurs family member, past and present, wants to be around to experience it.

It is expected to see big names like Tim Duncan, David Robinson, and others peak around the city over the years, but to see someone like McDermott, whose stint with the Spurs was short, still being active in the area, speaks volumes.

Additionally, McDermott's workout clip also had fans speculating that he could one day return to San Antonio as a member of the coaching staff in some capacity. Nonetheless, it is clear that the culture around the Spurs organization is the best in the NBA, and it shows no signs of fading.
