History Of Wolves V Manchester City

The first meeting of the two clubs was in Division 1 was on the 30th September 1899, played at Hyde Road and the game finished 1-1.

FA Cup – The first meeting in the FA Cup was in the 2nd Round of the competition, this was played on the 4th February 1911 and the game ended in a 1-0 win for Wolves.

League Cup – The teams first met in the League cup in the 2nd Round of the competition, played at Maine Road on the 8th September 1971, the game ended in a 4-3 win for Man City.

Premier League – The first meeting in the Premier league was on the 4th October 2003 played at Molineux in front of 29,386 fans and the game ended in a 1-0 win for Wolves.

There was another meeting between the two sides in the Premier League Asia Cup final played at the Hongkou Stadium in Shanghai. The game ended 0-0 after 90 minutes and then went straight to a penalty shootout and Wolves won the shootout 3-2 to win the Premier League Asia cup for the first time.

24th February 1900 Wolves won game 2-1 played at Hyde Road.

23rd May 1977 Manchester City won game 2-1 played at Molineux.

2nd August 1995 Wolves won game 2-1 played at Molineux.

30th July 2004 Manchester City won game 3-1 played at Molineux.

Premier League – The most recent game was on the 2nd May 2025 the game finished 1-0 to Manchester City with Kevin De Bruyne getting the only goal of the game at the Etihad Stadium in front of 53,282 fans

League Cup – The most recent game was on the 24th October 2017 which was at the Etihad Stadium in front of 50,755 fans and this game was a 4th Round Tie which ended in 0-0 draw after extra time and went to a penalty shootout where the game finished in a 4-1 shootout win for Man City.

Division 1 – The biggest Wolves win was on the 23rd December 1933 played at Molineux in front of 20,640 fans with a 8-0 win for Wolves.

Premier League – The biggest win was on the 6th October 2019 played at the Etihad Stadium in front of 54,435 fans with a 2-0 win for Wolves with Adama Traore getting both goals and this was the first win at Man City since 8th August 1999 when Robbie Keane scored the only goal of the game in Division 1 at Maine Road.

FA Cup – The biggest win was on the 16th January 1952 played at Molineux which was a 3rd round replay after the original game played on the 12th January 1952 ended in a 2-2 draw and the replay ended in a 4-1 win for Wolves.

The game started badly from the start of the game for the visitors when they lost Margetson in the opening 40 seconds of the game to injury when he suffered an accidental collision involving Symons & Roberts from a through pass made by Simon Osborn causing discomfort in both knees resulting him substituted in the game.

Half Time: Wolves 0 Manchester City 0

Wolves started the second half quickly and took the lead in the game when Osborn started to ball rolling with a cross with Symons slicing his clearance a few yards only to Dennison on the right wing to cross the ball to Roberts to head home from close range to give Wolves the 1-0 lead 1 minute into the second half of the game.

Then it was Manchester City turn to have a chance at goal when Kinkladze fed a thru ball to Summerbee who then passed it to Rosler in the Wolves box to head well over the bar right in front of goal.

Wolves then went again and attacked the Manchester City goal when Bull headed the ball to his strike partner Roberts to hit his shot at goal which hit Dibble only to rebound back to him and then Roberts hit it again and then went to the back of the net to make it 2-0 to Wolves to give them breathing space in the game with 53 minutes played.

Wolves then managed to get the goal of the game starting in the Manchester City midfield when Dennison started in his own half of the field went on the run pass the city defender Brightwell into the corner of the net to make it 3-0 Wolves manager and Assistant Manager happy on the sidelines with Wolves fans cheering on a great result for the team.

Division 2 – The biggest defeat was on the 18th December 1909 played at Hyde Road and the game finished in a 6-0 win for Man City.

Division 1 – The biggest defeat was on the 21st March 1904 played at Molineux and the game finished 6-1 to Man City.

Premier League – The biggest defeat between the two clubs has already been mentioned in the most recent meeting meetings section.

This was managers Colin Lee 50th game in charge of Wolves welcoming Manchester City to the golden palace who were top of the league with one of the best performances of the season.

This was also the first time Wolves had score more than three goals in a game since the Bristol City game when they won 6-1 and that was Wolves manager Lee first game in charge of the team.

Wolves started the game as they are serious with a goal in the opening 6 minutes of the game when Akinbiyi scored with a brilliant cross by Sinton towards Emblen who hit the bar with his header and Akinbiyi was on hand to head home from close range with Weaver beaten in the goal to make it 1-0.

Wolves then doubled their lead when Sinton flicked on from a throw in by Naylor towards Akinbiyi who the passed it back to Sinton in the box who was fouled by the Manchester City defenders and referee played advantage to find ball to Branch who managed to take on two defenders to score a goal on his debut with Weaver leaving an open goal to open his account after his loan move from Everton to make it 2-0 to Wolves after 19 minutes played.

Wolves then became a bit dis organised in the backline allowing Manchester City back into the game when Kennedy who will become a future Wolves player produced a cross to Goater in the box to prod home to make it 2-1 after 30 minutes played.

But Wolves did not dwell on this setback of conceding the goal when they got another goal in the 40th minute of the game when Emblen started the move towards Branch who then passed it to Akinbiyi who was on the wing thread it to Branch who poked it home for his second goal of the game what a debut he is having in the game to make it 3-1 such good service from your fellow striker.

Half Time: Wolves 3 Manchester City 1

The second half did not have many chances in the game with both teams having efforts either on target or off target.

Wolves did manage to get the 4th goal in the game when Osborn produced a beautiful cross towards Bazeley who went on a good run towards the goal to Muscat who fired it in to make 4-1 good play from the number two and three players with such good link play after 68 minutes played.

The game did not have many chances after this game with Wolves holding for the victory to send the Wolves fans happy after seeing a complete performance from a team that deserved the victory.
