Werder Bremen have been waiting for Leeds United to give the green light to sign Isaac Schmidt this summer.
The Bundesliga club have an agreement in place with the fullback, who is said to be keen on joining them. Leeds have reportedly informed them that they need a replacement first before letting the 25-year-old leave.
Two days ago, Deich Stube reported Werder Bremen want Leeds to make a decision in the coming days. On Wednesday, Bild stated their patience is running out due to the Whites’ delay.
Sky Deutschland point out Daniel Farke’s side will only let the Switzerland international leave if they can sign a replacement.
They add that at this moment in time, it’s difficult for Werder Bremen to complete this operation. Schmidt would like to join the German club and therefore, Sky say the ‘deal is not completely off the table yet’.
Schmidt left FC St. Gallen for the English club towards the end of last summer and played 71 minutes from 12 Championship games, which didn’t include a single start.
Former Switzerland international Stéphane Henchoz, who played for Liverpool, Celtic and Blackburn Rovers, has told Blick why Schmidt should considering leaving Leeds in this window.
“Wow, that’s going to be very difficult! I mean, the boy was still playing for St. Gallen a year ago. Not for YB or Basel. Then he’ll go to England’s second division and practically not play there. He didn’t make a single start in the starting eleven,” he said.
“And in England, it’s the case that a newly promoted team massively strengthens itself, and as a result, half of the starting eleven loses their place. Imagine what happens to someone who’s far behind in the hierarchy.”
“I’m sure Isaac’s management will also come to the conclusion that it makes sense to change leagues. There were rumours about Werder Bremen. That would be much better. Feasible, but even so. There won’t be any guarantees.”
