Manchester United midfielder Toby Collyer is close to joining West Brom on loan after the Red Devils agreed a deal with Hull City's Championship rivals.
City had been hopeful of getting the highly-rated midfielder signed before Sunday's MKM Stadium clash with Oxford United, but it appears that the 21-year-old will spend the campaign in the Midlands, though they have not yet given up hope and feel they still have a chance.
The Tigers are at a significant disadvantage compared to their Championship rivals, with the club unable to pay loan fees and that gave Albion the chance to step in ahead of City, as well as Sheffield Wednesday who are also sitting on the EFL's naughty step.
While the club remains subject to the transfer restrictions imposed on them by the EFL, they remain at serious risk of being gazumped in their bid to sign players, and Collyer joins a list of players who have gone elsewhere. Even with those restrictions, City have still been able to bring in the likes of Oliver McBurnie, Joe Gelhardt, John Lundstram, and Joel Ndala to give Sergej Jakirovic a competitive squad.
Despite seemingly missing out on Collyer, Jakirovic's squad is relatively well stocked in the middle of the park with John Lundstram, Regan Slater, Matt Crooks and Kasey Palmer, while Eliot Matazo is expected to return around Christmastime from his ACL injury.

City have also been impressed with the emergence of Cathal McCarthy since he arrived from UCD earlier in the summer, and he will remain as part of Jakirovic's squad.
If Collyer does end up at The Hawthorns, the Tigers may also return to the transfer market and seek another player capable of operating in the number six or eight position before the window closes on September 1 at 7pm.
