Liverpool City Council defend funeral fines

**Liverpool City Council has defended parking fines for people attending funerals.**

Mourners and staff visiting Anfield Crematorium have been hit with the penalty notices for parking in Priory Road, which was previously free of restrictions.

However the local authority has designated new spaces for coaching parking at nearby Anfield Stadium but not exclusively restricted to match days.

Anfield Cremotorium is one of nine burial sites in the city but crucially the only one which does not offer on-site parking provisions for mourners or even staff.

A notice sent to local funeral directors by the city’s Bereavement Services unit advised that it was aware people attending funerals had received parking tickets.

A spokesperson said: “Liverpool City Council will enforce car parking restrictions to ensure that our roads, streets and highways are safe for everyone.

“Many residents across the city, and particularly in the Anfield area, have asked for the council to ensure that enforcement is taking place.

“At the start of this year more than 50 new traffic enforcement officers were recruited to help tackle parking issues, which are a regular source of complaints from residents.”
