The Seattle Seahawks are inching closer to the 2025 regular season. The team has two preseason games left, and less than two weeks before final roster cuts have to be made. Most of the roster might already be decided, but a few spots remain in question.
Some of these spots might relate to the cornerback group, too. Riq Woolen and Devon Witherspoon are locks to make the team, of course. Josh Jobe and Shaquill Griffin probably are, too. But after that, it's anyone's guess. Second-year corner Nehemiah Pritchett, at least, is practicing better than he did as a rookie.
But while Seattle will play a bunch of its starters in preseason Week 2 versus the Kansas City Chiefs, the Chiefs might not do the same in return. KC head coach Andy Reid said this week that "there's a good chance" that quarterback Patrick Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce won't play against Seattle.
The Seattle Seahawks are unlikely to face Patrick Mahomes in preseason Week 2
Of course, holding Mahomes and Kelce out of a meaningless preseason game makes sense. The two have played together for so long, they probably only need a practice or two to get ready for the real games. But Seattle could have used playing against Mahomes.
Sure, maybe the Seahawks would have had Witherspoon and Woolen on the field during the series or two that Mahomes would have gotten, but head coach Mike Macdonald could have also subbed out with presumed backups, and players fighting for their roster lives, such as Pritchett, Shemar Jean-Charles, and Keydrain Calligan.
Instead, assuming those players play a bunch against the Chiefs, they will be facing former Washington State star Gardner Minshew. Nothing wrong with Minshew as he has a lot of starts in the NFL, but he won't stress a secondary like Mahomes.
Here is the good part (and the truth), Mike Macdonald and defensive coordinator Aden Durde can probably tell enough from seeing training camp sessions to decide who to keep on the roster. Still, if there was any chance at a real roster battle, Patrick Mahomes could have helped decide it.
The Seattle Seahawks' QB1, Sam Darnold, will probably play a series or three, however. This will be the first time 12s will get to see the free agent acquisition take on a team that isn't wearing the same jersey as him with Seattle. Rookie Jalen Milroe should play quite a bit more than Darnold, though.
