A former Newcastle United star could make a surprise move to Wolves or Sunderland just months after agreeing a transfer.
Wolverhampton Wanderers and several Premier League rivals have reportedly been handed the opportunity to sign former Newcastle United defender Lloyd Kelly.
The Old Gold are in the market for a new centre-half as Vitor Pereira, who prefers to operate with a back three, is not quite satisfied with his depth in numbers. Many possible targets have been linked including Bologna’s Jhon Lucumi, Millwall’s Japhet Tanganga, Udinese’s Thomas Kristensen and Chelsea’s Axel Disasi, but it appears yet more names are on the shortlist.
Kelly, who only joined Juventus permanently in July following a six-month loan from Newcastle, is being tipped for a surprise exit. The 26-year-old signed for the Old Lady for around £15 million after making 12 Serie A appearances during the second half of last season but he’s reportedly being offered out just as his Juve career gets underway.
Defender transfer ‘floated’ to Wolves and Sunderland
Wolves are one of several clubs to have been contacted about the possibility of signing Kelly. The Mirror reports Wanderers, Sunderland and Crystal Palace are among a string of Premier League clubs to have been offered the chance to land the former AFC Bournemouth man.
It awaits to be seen how much Juventus want to let Kelly go so soon after signing him, but it appears his exit is being pushed for. Perhaps it was the plan all along to buy Kelly to sell on for a profit, but it feels a little desperate if it is indeed intermediaries doing the hard yards.
Formerly an England Under-21 international, Kelly recently started all four of Juventus’ matches at the FIFA Club World Cup. Capable of playing at centre-back or left-back, the versatile defender didn’t make his mark at Newcastle as he played just 596 minutes.
The move to Juventus, just six months on from his arrival at St. James’ Park, was hoped to be an exciting new chapter in Kelly’s career. That dream could soon be over, though, if Wolves, Sunderland, Palace or any other club offered his services decides to proceed with an offer.
Fabio Silva saga dragging on
In other Wolves transfer news, attacker Fabio Silva is still yet to leave Molineux despite negotiations being underway for weeks with several suitors. The Portugal international, signed from Porto for a whopping £35 million back in 2020, has been eyed by AS Roma and Borussia Dortmund.
Silva has scored only five goals in 72 appearances for the Old Gold, with just four of those strikes coming in the Premier League. He had mixed results during loan stints at Anderlecht, PSV Eindhoven and Rangers but did impress last term during a season-long stint at Las Palmas in La Liga, scoring 10 times in 25 outings.
