During a recent appearance on the Road Trippin podcast, the 2008 NBA champion revealed that his controversial take on Giannis Antetokounmpo—when he called Khris Middleton “the Batman” of the 2021 Bucks championship team—led to him receiving death threats.
“I started getting a death threat,” Perkins said. “It was going to my wife’s account. This dude was sending me threat after threat. ‘I am going to kill your kids; I know where you stay. I am going to murder you.’ This was real life.”
Perkins added that the experience underscores the importance of security for both players and media members. The NBA and major networks maintain systems to protect individuals from harassment. In this case, those systems worked.
“The work might be about basketball,” Perkins said, “but the stakes can be much higher.”
