West Ham could add a Ruben Amorim favourite to their ranks before the summer window comes to a close.

Amorim, 40, currently finds himself at Manchester United, where he has faced his fair share of struggles as the Red Devils continue to frustrate.

This saw the Old Trafford club finish below Graham Potter’s side in 15th, a hugely disappointing campaign which was made worse by their Europa League final defeat.

Things are somewhat looking up for the Portuguese head coach after a busy window of activity at Carrington, something which the Hammers will be keen on replicating in the coming weeks.

It could be the signing of an Amorim favourite, which ultimately injects some fresh optimism into the Irons’ summer business.

West Ham line up Southampton’s Mateus Fernandes

It is fair to say that Potter is in need of reinforcements after a frustrating start to his spell in charge at the London Stadium.

This has already seen El Hadji Malick Diouf and Mads Hermansen come in at West Ham for a fee, with another transfer potentially in the pipeline.

This comes as the Irons continue to showcase an interest in Mateus Fernandes at Southampton after making an initial approach.

Talks will only resume if the Irons pay something close to that figure

A £30m bid has since been rejected by the Saints, with David Sullivan backed to make a deal for Fernandes happen before the window ends.

As a result, the Hammers faithful are awaiting further bids for the 21-year-old ahead of a potential signing before the curtain falls on the window.

Supporters’ hopes of completing a deal have only increased after quotes from former Sporting boss Amorim over the midfielder’s exit last summer.

As quoted by A Bola in 2024 (22 August), the Man United boss was left devastated to lose the Portgual under-21 international to Southampton.

He said: “What we lost is a player. A young man with a lot of value who, in my opinion, has the characteristics to be a great player.

“But choices were made. And then, obviously, we do everything together. We really wanted to keep Mateus. And, honestly, I think Mateus would have liked to stay, despite it being a big contract and a big league. It was a difficult time for everyone.”

Fernandes could transform West Ham

It is fair to say that the young midfielder struggled for the Saints last season, but almost every single player was dragged down in that squad.

In one of the worst teams in Premier League history, it would have been tough for anyone to give a better account of themselves.

That is what the ex-Estoril loanee managed to do in what was a somewhat positive year in one that was marred by storm clouds around St Mary’s.

If West Ham are to pay what Southampton want for Fernandes, they will land a top player and one who will grow with the squad.

As a progressive ace to line up alongside the likes of Edson Alvarez and Tomas Soucek, Potter could unlock his entire 11 with this one addition.
