Cody Gakpo sends strong message ahead of Premier League opener

Liverpool return to league action under the lights at Anfield, starting their title defence with the first Premier League opener at home since 2020.

Gakpo says the squad’s pre-season preparations, in Asia and back in the UK, have set them up for a strong start.

“I think everybody is eager to start,” the Dutch forward told Liverpool FC.

“We had a good pre-season overall. We got new signings who integrated well.

“Now it starts and hopefully we can show the world that we are here again.”

Arne Slot’s side will be facing a Bournemouth team that finished ninth last season under Andoni Iraola and is known for high-intensity football.

For Gakpo, starting fast is about more than points, it’s about sending a message.

“I always think with the first game of the season you want to start the season well,” he explained.

“Maybe a little bit more adrenaline than normal… We have to be intense as well, what we showed last season in a lot of games.

“And we have to be better on the ball – I think we can create a lot.”

Liverpool’s forwards, he says, must lead from the front in and out of possession.

“It starts with us most of the time. When the opponent tries to build up, it starts with us who are pressing.

“If we get that right, maybe it’s easier to get them to stay in their half and hopefully recover the ball there.

“But it starts with us and it’s a team thing. We have to do it together.”
