Man United finished 15th in the Premier League table last season, which was their worst year in the PL era.
Ruben Amorim will be under a lot of pressure this season, as the United boss no longer has any excuses not to show signs of improvement. Last year, Amorim stuck to his 3-4-3 system, despite arguably not having the players at his disposal to make it work effectively.
However, this summer, Amorim has brought in some of ‘his’ players; the likes of Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, who can star in the two number 10 roles, should provide Amorim with a better-fitting team this year.
If United have a slow start to the year, the United boss could be under pressure. However, there is certainly a lot of optimism around Old Trafford, with many believing that United could be significantly better this summer.
Man United told they could finish 7th
Ahead of the new season, Man United are keen to improve, but also keen to get themselves back into Europe as they may struggle to recruit next year if they don’t have European football at Old Trafford.
Many have been led to suggest that United could challenge for Champions League football this season based on their recruitment and the fact that Amorim has had a pre-season with his team.
BBC Sport pundit Phil McNulty has published his Premier League table prediction, and he has made a surprise prediction, suggesting that United will finish seventh this season. He wrote: “This prediction may raise eyebrows even among some fervent Manchester United fans, but it is based on Ruben Amorim having had an entire summer to get his entrenched three-man central-defensive system firmly fixed in his players' minds and also because of some serious strengthening in attack.
“They surely cannot be as bad again. Can they? One rider, though - if they do not improve and United look as lost and hopeless as they did under Amorim at stages last season, he will swiftly be under a very unforgiving microscope.”
If United were to finish seventh, that could land them European football, as last year, seventh was enough to secure the Europa Conference League.
Man United fans are more optimistic than Arsenal and Man City
Following their impressive recruitment, Man United fans are hopeful that things could get a lot better at Old Trafford under Ruben Amorim, and that a big improvement is in line.
In a recent study evaluating how optimistic fans of every Premier League club are, Man United ranked fifth. It claimed that 86% of United fans are optimistic, compared to just 14% who are pessimistic.
That ranking put United above Arsenal and Manchester City, who are both expected to challenge for the Premier League title this year. Chelsea were said to be the most optimistic at 98%, ahead of Liverpool, Brighton, and newly-promoted side Sunderland.
Newcastle United fans are the most pessimistic, something that doesn’t come as a surprise considering that they missed out on a lot of top transfer targets this summer, including Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko, who both joined United.
