Eagles Starter's Replacement Shows Concerning Signs in Joint Practice

The Philadelphia Eagles already have a two-headed monster on their roster at the wide receiver position in A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith. With those two leading the charge on the outside, there is excitement within the team facility that a third receiver on the roster could not be far off from making that leap of his own.

While his career did not get off to the kind of start he expected after being drafted by one of Philadelphia's chief rivals in the NFC East, Philadelphia has offered the recent first-round pick a true home in the league where he can grow into the player he was expected to be following a standout career at Penn State University.

Yes, we are referring to fourth-year WR Jahan Dotson. The wideout has a fan in offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo. Philadelphia's play caller has seen real growth in the receiver and believes there are ways to use him in different spots on offense to make an already dangerous unit even more of a threat.

Eagles Coach Clearly Not Quitting on WR Jahan Dotson Just Yet

The Eagles acquired Dotson at the end of the 2024 preseason, and, understandably so, it took him a while to acclimate himself to the way things were done in Philadelphia after spending his first two seasons as a pro with the Washington Commanders. Considering the gap between the two franchises and what they have accomplished over the last two decades, it's fair to assume that it was quite the shift for Dotson going from a perennial bottom-feeder to the class of the NFC.

This is not something that is lost on new offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo. Despite an underwhelming 2024 campaign that saw Dotson reel in just 19 catches for 216 yards, the Eagles have plenty of faith in what the 25-year-old can bring to this offense.

"He's a really good route runner," Patullo said, via John Clark of NBC Sports Philadelphia. "That's the one thing when you put the tape on or you watch him in person, his route running ability is really dynamic and I think his maturity of just being around the other guys, you can start to feel him in different ways in the offense. I think what he's shown too is you can move him around. I don't know necessarily if we knew that when we first got him, but now he's in a spot where we can put him anywhere and we feel confident. So I think his game has grown tremendously from that standpoint.”

Dynamic was one of the words used to describe Dotson coming out of the Big 10, and, at least in the eyes of Patullo, that description still fits the wide receiver. With the versatility he's shown the coaching staff, that ability to move him around on the outside should open up more opportunities for Dotson to bring those same dynamic plays that were commonplace at Penn State to the City of Brotherly Love.
