Fabrizio Romano: West Brom 'win race' to loan Premier League starlet in blow to Hull City

The latest transfer news as West Brom strike a deal with Manchester United.

The Baggies, eager to add depth and quality in the middle of the park, have seen off a host of Championship rivals to secure Collyer’s services. Ryan Mason has been delighted with what he’s seen from Alex Mowatt and Jayson Molumby in the double pivot, but it’s understood another option was desired to offer competition and cover.

Collyer, who made 15 senior appearances for Man Utd last season including six outings in the Premier League and four in the Europa League, has chosen a move to the Championship to continue his development. United, in conversation with Collyer throughout the summer, agreed a temporary move away was the best course of action.

West Brom clinch Man Utd loan deal

Albion, just one of many Championship sides interested, have won the race to sign Collyer. The Athletic reports the ‘structure of the deal has been agreed’ and that Collyer is in advanced talks with the Baggies.

Although not over the line just yet, it’s a deal that’s expected to be completed as the player is keen on the move to The Hawthorns. It’s a blow for Hull City as transfer news specialist Fabrizio Romano reports the Tigers ‘tried in recent weeks’ to lure Collyer to the MKM Stadium.

Man Utd are said to trust Collyer as a player with great potential for the future, so it’s just a straight loan move to West Brom without an option or obligation to buy. They say to never fall in love with a loan player but it could be tricky for Albion fans if Collyer lives up to the hype.

Collyer requested Man Utd exit

Despite enjoying a breakthrough in the United first team at the end of last term, Collyer has looked at the bigger picture and believes more guaranteed starts are what’s best for him at this stage of his career.

Ruben Amorim used Collyer three times in pre-season - against Leeds United, West Ham United and AFC Bournemouth - but he was then benched for the final two friendlies against Everton and Fiorentina. Understandably so, the likes of Casemiro, Manuel Ugarte and Kobbie Mainoo are ahead in the pecking order.

Collyer admitted during United’s tour of the United States that he was considering his situation and was weighing up a loan away. “I think first and foremost I want to be here and play as many games for Man United as possible,” Collyer said.

“I’ll sit down with the manager and higher-ups and see what’s the best solution for that. The best thing for me is develop, whether it’s staying here or going on loan. The end goal for me is to play as many minutes as possible here, hopefully starting every week. So yeah, I’ll sit down with them.”

Collyer will be hoping his decision to join West Brom rather than Hull will turn out to be the right one. As will both Albion and Man Utd, eager to make it a successful loan.
